Prof. De Meijer currently serves as Professor of Surgery at the University of Groningen, Head of the Liver Transplant Program at the University Medical Center Groningen, and Chair of the UMCG Comprehensive Transplant Center. He has made transformative contributions to liver transplantation, particularly through pioneering advancements in machine perfusion techniques. His research focuses on the implementation of prolonged hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion for donor livers, a strategy designed to minimize the need for nighttime transplantations—a development with the potential to significantly reshape clinical practice. Additionally, he co-developed a protocol for sequential hypothermic and normothermic machine perfusion, enabling the viability assessment of otherwise non-utilized, high-risk donor livers and facilitating their safe transplantation. Furthermore, his research explores extended, multiday liver machine perfusion, providing a platform to study ex situ liver physiology and regeneration, and to investigate therapeutic interventions.
